Introduction
In the final days of December, and on the threshold of the year 2026, this article reaches its concluding lines; days that are also blessed by the auspicious and sacred birth of Jesus Christ (PB UH). With utmost respect and sincere appreciation, we dedicate this work to our Armenian compatriots, whose significant and undeniable contributions have profoundly enriched the musical heritage of Iran. The role of the Armenian community in the advancement and refinement of our nation’s distinguished and highly valuable musical tradition is a clear and enduring truth. Undoubtedly, a considerable portion of the depth and richness found in Iranian music today is indebted to the efforts, creativity and highly valuable presence of this honorable community of Iranian Armenians. Indeed, many of the earliest pioneers and a significant number of influential musicians in our beloved country have been our Armenian compatriots, and in this article, we shall introduce some of their most distinguished figures.
Iranian Armenian Musicians
Loris Tjeknavorian (1937 Boroujerd – ): An internationally renowned Iranian composer and conductor, he has dedicated his career to elevating the prestige of Iranian music on the global stage. His prolific body of work spans operas, ballets, symphonies, and film scores, performed by prestigious orchestras worldwide. Among his most celebrated masterpieces are the operas “Rostam and Sohrab”, “Pardis and Parisa”, “Siavash”, and also “Shams and Rumi”. Deeply rooted in Persian literature and history, his artistry is defined by a lifelong commitment to patriotism and cultural service. He conducted numerous orchestras across various countries, including Iran, Armenia, Austria, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Rouben Gregorian (1915 Tbilisi – 1991 Boston): A prominent figure in Iranian music; who followed in the footsteps of his father, “Levon Gregorian”, leaving an indelible mark on the arts. Throughout his distinguished career, he served as the conductor of the Tehran Symphony Orchestra, director of the Conservatory of Music and also acting head of the National Music Administration. “Rouben Gregorian” has also been a well-known and highly respected musician in the United States of America. As a pioneer in ethnomusicology, he was the first to systematically collect Iranian folk songs from across the nation and arranging them for choral performance; this monumental undertaking was achieved with the vital collaboration of the eminent musician “Hrayr Galestian”, father of the renowned contemporary musician and well-known researcher “Andre Galestian”.
Emanuel Melik Aslanian (1915 Rostov – 2003 Tehran): A well-known composer and a stylistically unique pianist; “Emanuel Melik Aslanian” left behind a legacy of timeless works that have graced international stages through numerous orchestral performances. Beyond his compositions, he was a dedicated educator and faculty member at the University of Tehran, where he mentored many students and some of his students became famous musicians. Furthermore, besides his career, he was renowned for his high ethical standards and outstanding character, throughout his life.
Ivan Galamian (1903 Tehran – 1981 New York): He was one of the most influential violin educators of the 20th century and had a global reputation. In the United States, he was widely known as one of the top violin instructors, and some of the world’s greatest violinists were trained by him.
Hovhannes Abkarian »Yahya Tarsaz« (1875 Isfahan – 1931 Isfahan): He is recognized as one of the greatest and most preeminent makers of the tar. Experts and connoisseurs consider “Yahya’s Tar” to be the pinnacle of the craft, possessing a tone that is regarded as one of the finest ever produced. He refined the process of crafting the tar, presenting high-quality and exceptional instruments to the musicians and art lovers of Iran. These instruments have been immortalized through descriptions in the pages of history and are preserved today in music museums.
Nicol Galanderian (1881 Akn – 1944 Tehran): He was a prominent and respected composer who composed or arranged many musical pieces. He was one of the most productive composers in the country and left a lasting impact through his many years of teaching.
Levon Gregorian (1886 Tabriz – 1957 Tehran): He was one of the most pioneering musicians in the country. He established the very first symphony orchestra in Iran and brought many famous works to the stage. Among these was the celebrated opera “Anoush”, composed by the renowned Armenian composer “Armen Tigranian” which is based on the masterpiece poem of the same name by the famous Armenian poet “Hovhannes Toumanian”. “Levon Gregorian”, who was the father and the first music educator of the well-known musician “Rouben Gregorian”, had a profound influence on the progress of music in Iran.
Hambartsoum Gregorian (1893 Tabriz – 1975 Tehran): He was a renowned and distinguished composer who composed or arranged numerous pieces. Furthermore, he was very prolific and influential in the field of music education.
Vahik Khojaian (1929 Tehran – 2015 Reno): He was the founder of the first orchestra at National Iranian Radio. Throughout his prolific life, he conducted numerous orchestras in various countries and was recognized internationally as a distinguished conductor.
Varoujan Hakhbandian (1936 Qazvin – 1977 Tehran): He was a renowned musician and one of Iran’s greatest composers. He was one of the pioneers of pop music in Iran. Throughout his career, he created numerous works, including the scores for various films and television series. He was also the composer and arranger of many pop compositions and is remembered as the “Father of Modern Iranian Songwriting”.
Andre Arzoumanian (1954 Tehran – 2010 Tehran): He was a famous composer and one of the country’s most renowned pianists. He possessed a unique style of piano performance and composed the scores for numerous films. He continued his musical career until the end of his life and was a very prolific musician.
Gourgen Movsesian (1942 Hamedan – 2014 Los Angeles): He is recognized as one of the country’s most successful choral conductors. He has led numerous choirs, including the National Iranian Radio and Television Chorus and the Tehran Symphonic Orchestra Chorus.
Andre Galestian (1976 Tehran – ): He is a reputable Iranian pianist and well-known musicologist who is widely renowned for his extensive research into the history of music in Iran and the world. A significant portion of the information available today, regarding the greatest musicians of Iran, stems from his meticulous research. Some years ago, his name and biography were included in the “Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Iranian Music”; and due to his age at the time, he was the youngest musician ever to be given that great honor. In addition to music, he has conducted extensive research in the field of Persian and world literature. At the end of this article, a video clip is provided, featuring his remarks as a guest expert during a live television broadcast on the history of Armenian music, which can be very informative. In the mentioned clip, he is joined by host-expert “Reza Mahdavi” and fellow guest “Vartan Sahakian”, both of whom are famous musicians and university faculty members and also recipients of Iran’s First-Class Arts Certificate. “Andre Galestian” began his musical training in early childhood, expanding his focus during his youth into a rigorous study of the history of Iranian and world music. Although his professional career is rooted in international trade and also economic discourse, he has pursued the study of music and literature with professional expertise and academic depth. Consequently, he has contributed highly valuable research to scholars and artists, enriching the worlds of science and art in Iran and across the international community.
Vartan Sahakian (1957 Shahroud – ): He is recognized as one of the country’s most distinguished musicians, having played a particularly active role in music education. A number of prominent Iranian musicians were among his students. For many consecutive years, he has been engaged in teaching music, while also maintaining a significant presence in the field of composition.
Rafael Minaskanian (1941 Tehran – ): He is a renowned pianist and an experienced music educator. Throughout his many years of professional career, he has dedicated significant effort to the field of music teaching and is considered a pioneer in music education.
Loris Hovian (1973 Abadan – ): He belongs to the relatively younger generation of Iranian-Armenian musicians and composers. He is the founder of several orchestras and choral groups and has also made significant contributions to the field of music education.
Razmik Ohanian: He is among the most prolific and renowned composers, conductors, and choral directors in the country. A highly respected figure in both Iran and Armenia, he has conducted numerous orchestras and choral groups throughout his distinguished career. He is widely recognized for his refined taste and creative spirit.
Serzhik Mirzaiyan: He is a musician and composer from the relatively younger generation who has created exquisite and enduring works. He is a highly talented and successful conductor and choral director.

The history of Iranian music is inseparable from the brilliant and unrivaled contributions of the eminent musicians of the noble Iranian-Armenian community. In this brief overview, the authors have endeavored to introduce a number of the country’s greatest musicians from the Armenian community. It is evident that this list is far more extensive, and many other names deserve a place on it; but due to the limitations aimed at ensuring the brevity required for such articles in digital media, we have limited ourselves to introducing only some of the most distinguished masters and most eminent professors.
At the conclusion of this article, a second video has been included, which provides a concise introduction to the aforementioned masters. Although we produced and released this clip some years ago, its republication remains a fitting tribute.
